GP2.
Istanbul – Turkey – Race One – Saturday 10th May
There was no Turkish delight for the Super Nova team this afternoon, after a problematic Race One, at the high tech Istanbul Park of Turkey.
The teams’ Portuguese driver Alvaro Parente had to start from the pits, after his car wouldn’t select first gear on the grid. His problems worsened as he returned to the pit lane with a software failure & reluctantly retired from the race after completing just 7 laps.
His team mate for this weekend Andy Soucek, began from 12th in great form, passing several competitors & challenging for fastest lap. Unfortunately by the time a blown electrical fuse was replaced, the young driver was 3 laps down and had no chance of finishing in the points. All in all a frustrating day for the team.
Giorgio Pantano (Racing Engineering) dominated the race today starting and finishing in first, followed by GP2 Asia’s reigning champion Romain Grosjean (ART) who moved up two places to take second. Andreas Zuber (Piquet Sports) completed the podium coming in third place.
Team Principal David Sears “Sometimes motor racing has a lot of disappointment and this weekend, the Super Nova has had its share. Alvaro Parente’s car would not select first gear on the grid, so had to start from the pits. Then when he came in for his pit stop he suffered with another problem, and retired on the spot. Andy Soucek looked strong for a top ten finish, when his car also suffered with an electrical problem. His lap times were good, but after our initial success in Barcelona, todays results are massively different. ”
Alvaro Parente “I had problems from the grid, so had to start from the pits. I got going but when I came back in for the pit stop the engine went down. I think it is something electrical, but we’ve just got to wait and to see.”
Andy Soucek “I had a good start, and although I was hit on the rear left at the end of the straight, there was no damage done. I pushed hard and passed three or four cars, and came out of the pit stop behind Carroll in P11. Then I had problems with the gear box, one of the sensors didn’t connect, so I had to come in with no gear selection. By the time I rejoined I was 3 laps down, so no chance of any points, but I am very happy with the pace we had today.”
