Press release – Barcelona
Qualifying
Reigning GP2 Series champion iSport International overcame one or two setbacks to make a positive start to its 2008 campaign at the Circuit de Catalunya, near Barcelona. Having shown strong form during the recent GP2 Asia series, the team’s new drivers swiftly got to grips with the latest Dallara chassis, which is being raced for the first time this weekend. Bruno Senna missed part of this afternoon’s qualifying session, after a spin, but he will line up fourth on tomorrow’s 26-car grid. Karun Chandhok starts seventh after recovering strongly from an accident during this morning’s free practice session.
Bruno Senna
“I’m pleased with my position, although things would have been better but for my spin. The team changed my gearshift paddles after this morning’s free practice session, because the original ones were a bit too big, and the replacement kept sticking slightly. I had completed one quick run on my first set of tyres and was starting a second when the paddle jammed again. I was stuck in fourth gear and looking at the steering wheel, trying to sort things out, which caused me to lose concentration and spin off at Turn Two. At least, though, I still have one fresh set of rubber for tomorrow – that could be important, because this circuit is incredibly hard on rear tyres.”
Karun Chandhok
“Firstly I have to say a big ‘Thanks’ to the guys – they did a brilliant job to repair my car after this morning’s accident, when the car was handling a little unpredictably and I was simply caught out. They got the job finished just before the start of the session and the balance felt really good, despite the last-minute nature of our preparations. My last lap was my quickest, but even then I lost a couple of tenths in the first sector because there was a load of oil on the track at Turn One. But for that I think I would have been right up at the front with Bruno.”
Race 1
Senna second for iSport in Spain – unlucky Chandhok just fails to score
Bruno Senna finished only half a second shy of victory when the GP2 Series began at Barcelona’s Circuit de Catalunya this afternoon. Starting fourth, the Brazilian gained one place off the startline and benefited from the iSport team’s slick pit work when he made an early tyre stop during a Safety Car period. He entered the pits in third place, rejoined the track in second and spent the rest of the afternoon putting leader Alvaro Parente under serious pressure. Ultimately, though, there was no way through and he finished half a second behind his Portuguese rival.
Team-mate Karun Chandhok made a fantastic start to rise from seventh to fourth on the opening lap – but he was then obliged to queue behind his team-mate during the tyre stops. That dropped him to ninth, one place outside the points, and that’s where he finished after playing his part in a lively five-car battle.
Senna and Chandhok will line up seventh and ninth respectively for tomorrow morning’s sprint race.
Bruno Senna
“The team did a brilliant job during the tyre stops and after that I tried absolutely everything I could to pass Alvaro. He made no mistakes, though, and deserved his victory. I experimented with different gears and different racing lines, but there was simply no way through.
“The main thing is that we have had a strong, competitive weekend. This year’s car is much more physically challenging to drive than the old one, but I feel fine and have come away with a healthy number of points. If the team continues to perform like this, victories will follow.”
Karun Chandhok
“What can I say? I got an absolutely fantastic start and felt quite comfortable sitting just behind Bruno. With the two of us running so close together, I was just thinking, ‘I hope there isn’t a Safety Car’ when it appeared! In that situation, whoever is behind on the track is always going to lose out, but overall it is much more effective to bring the cars in simultaneously. The team did a good job turning both cars around so quickly under pressure, but circumstances basically compromised my afternoon. I was involved in a very entertaining battle after my stop, but passing at this circuit borders on the impossible. The car was much better than my result suggests, but it was just one of those things.”
Race 2
Senna takes share of series lead – damage forces Chandhok out
Bruno Senna maintained his encouraging start to the GP2 Series season with a strong drive to fourth place in this morning’s sprint race at the Circuit de Catalunya. Second in yesterday’s season-opener, the Brazilian lined up seventh and had threaded his iSport Dallara up to fifth place by the time a Safety Car made a brief appearance late in the race. When leader Romain Grosjean was penalised for his part in an incident with closest rival Kamui Kobayashi, Senna moved up to fourth and scored three points that give him a share of the championship lead.
His team-mate Karun Chandhok was knocked into a spin on the opening lap and later incurred further damage that precipitated his retirement.
Bruno Senna
“We have underlined our competitiveness throughout the weekend and shown that we have the pace to mount a championship challenge, so I couldn’t ask for more. My goal today was to make up as many places as possible without taking any risks, and I did exactly that. I had a few problems with my gearbox during the second part of the race – it missed a few upshifts and some of the downchanges were quite abrupt, but overall I’m absolutely delighted with the way things have gone. It gives us an excellent platform for the rest of the season.”
Karun Chandhok
“The past two days have been frustrating. The car has been quick, but I have come away with nothing to show for it. I spun on the opening lap because somebody hit me – I have no idea who it was – and then I was stuck in a gaggle of cars towards the tail of the field. I made up a few places, but some of the guys back there were fairly wild. I ended up bending a steering arm, so I dropped out with a couple of laps to go.”
